Representatives of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) believe that billionaires who profit from things such as C19, as well as Gulf states currently benefiting from high fuel prices, must do more to end global hunger. The global food crisis is only set to worsen, as approximately 345 million people are now facing potential starvation, compared to 80 million people six years ago, WFP Executive Director David Beasley said on 30 June.

"50 million people in 45 countries are "knocking" on the door of famine," he said, noting that such a situation could also lead to mass migration. Given the 10 billion US dollar (9.6 billion euro) deficit in WFP funding and Russia's war in Ukraine, the problem of food shortages is likely to become unmanageable, he warned. D. Beasley stressed that immediate action must be taken, pointing out that during the peak of the pandemic, the net worth of billionaires increased by an average of 5.2 billion dollars per day. "All we are asking for is to give us the equivalent of one or two days' increase in your wealth." (...)
