EU considers reaching a 45% share of renewable energy by 2030

The European Commission is assessing whether the European Union could set a higher target, namely reaching a 45% share of renewable energy by 2030. This would be instead of the currently proposed (planned) 40%, aiming to accelerate the reduction of the bloc's dependence on fossil fuels supplied by Russia.

"We are working hard on this, obviously, considering, first of all, the proposal to increase the share of renewable energy from 40 to 45%, and, secondly, in the context of higher energy prices," said Mechthild Woersdoerfer, Deputy Director-General of the EC's Energy Department, at a recent meeting of EU lawmakers Mechthild Woersdoerfer.

Russia is the largest gas supplier to the EU, and the mentioned renewable energy target for 2030, namely 40%, was proposed by the EC last (2021) year.

Currently, the share of renewable energy resources in EU member states varies significantly, ranging from more than 50% in Sweden to less than 10% in Luxembourg. (...)
