The concept of biodiversity is a significant factor in various decision-making processes, although few delve into the substance and impact of this concept. It is important to remember the history of how it (the biodiversity concept) emerged, evolving from a minor topic into one of the most significant ones. Few likely remember exactly how this happened.

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity was adopted in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. The main objectives included in the Convention were the conservation of species habitats and diversity, the protection of global ecosystems, flora and fauna, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Finland traditionally took this Convention quite seriously! In short, the Finns were among the EU leaders in implementing the ideas of the Convention, something we can rightly be proud of!
