The environmental impact of war. Not every European country has as much forest as Russia has already destroyed in Ukraine

The Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources has assessed the damage caused to nature by the war, with losses (damages) reaching nearly 1.9 trillion hryvnias, Minister Ruslan Strilets (Руслан Стрілець) announced on Wednesday: “Not every European country has as much forest as the Russians have destroyed in Ukraine,” he told media representatives.

Currently, almost 500,000 hectares of forest are in occupied territories or in a combat zone; about 2.4 million hectares of forest have been liberated, but they require restoration.

Ten national parks, eight nature reserves, and two biosphere reserves are occupied. In total, hostilities have affected one-fifth of Ukraine's protected areas. Approximately 600 fauna and 750 flora species, including species listed in the Red Data Book, are threatened with extinction.

The most industrially developed part of Ukraine is in the war zone. The occupiers have seized 132 mineral deposits.

Russian actions have caused additional direct CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere, amounting to approximately 33 million tonnes. As a result of fires caused by hostilities (in forests, agricultural and other facilities), more than 23 million tonnes of greenhouse gases have been released into the atmosphere.
