Japan's GDP per capita in 2021 was 33.7 thousand euros. In turn, the average GDP per capita level in Augšdaugava Municipality is somewhere between that of Belarus and Moldova.

The Central Statistical Bureau (CSP) has begun preparing data on the scale of GDP in Latvia's regions, state cities, and municipalities. The CSP explains the methods used: “Calculations are based on Latvia's gross domestic product from the production aspect at current prices by type of activity, according to indicators received from economically active units in the region. Regional GDP is calculated as the sum of the value added of institutional units of all types of economic activity and product taxes in the region, minus subsidies. The value added (and consequently GDP) of each institutional unit is redistributed according to information available to the CSP regarding the geographical location of the local kind-of-activity unit, proportional to the number of people employed there.”

As CSP data shows, in current prices, Latvia's GDP in 2021 was 33.3 billion euros. More than half of the total GDP generated (52.9%) was attributed to Riga, while Riga together with the Pierīga region generated two-thirds (68.8%) of Latvia's total GDP. 9.3% was attributed to Kurzeme, 8.1% to Zemgale, 7% to Vidzeme, and 6.6% to Latgale. Calculating GDP per capita, in Riga in 2021 it was 28.9 thousand euros, but in the Latgale region – only 8.8 thousand euros. The difference between the development of Riga and Latgale was 3.3 times.

In 2021, the highest GDP per capita was in Mārupe Municipality – 30.2 thousand euros, followed by Riga with 28.9 thousand euros, and in third place was Ropaži Municipality – 23.4 thousand euros. Only Valmiera, Ķekava, and Smiltene municipalities were also above Latvia's average GDP per capita of 17.7 thousand euros.

For all other administrative units in Latvia, GDP per capita in 2021 was below the Latvian average. In Jūrmala and Ogre, as well as in the Limbaži, Varakļāni, Tukums, Bauska, Valka, Alūksne, Ogre, and Ludza municipalities, the average GDP per capita was below 10 thousand euros, while in the Preiļi, Krāslava, Rēzekne, Balvi, and Augšdaugava municipalities, the average GDP per capita was below 8 thousand euros. In 2021, the development levels between Mārupe and Augšdaugava municipalities differed by 5.4 times.
