A changing climate is not the cause of all misfortunes

Global warming causes around 120,000 deaths from heat each year, while at the same time protecting around 300,000 people from freezing to death.

Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody knows anything about it. Yet they talk. This somewhat biting witticism is often attributed to the writer Mark Twain or his friend Charles Dudley Warner (Charles Dudley Warner). In these times (the 21st century), the aforementioned sentence could describe almost any description of unpleasant weather. The media claim that natural weather conditions, including unpleasant and even catastrophic ones, are caused by climate change, and that radical measures and specific actions or policies are needed to combat them.

Such a very narrow view provides a rather distorted insight into what is happening, including those events that have been well studied by scientists. Referring to the still-topical issue of flooding in Germany and Belgium, German Chancellor Angela Merkel 'blames' them on the climate and its changes. At the same time, a new study (On rivers) of approximately 10,000 rivers around the world shows that rivers are currently overflowing much less. For example, to put it figuratively but based on science, floods that were considered "1-in-50-year floods" in the 1970s could now be considered "1-in-152-year floods". These changes have been brought about by urbanisation, various flood control, containment and prevention measures, as well as the changing climate.
