The Environment Advisory Council (VKP), which unites 20 non-governmental environmental organisations, criticised the government in an open letter this week for ignoring its recommendations and those of other public organisations while preparing the State Waste Management Plan (AAVP). The government approved it a week ago on Thursday.
Under the circular economy scenario, it is planned that 889,359 tonnes of municipal waste will be generated in Latvia in 2028 – 15% more than in 2020. Calculated per person, the amount of municipal waste generated in 2028 is expected to have risen by 30% and reach 532 kg per inhabitant. However, such figures do not appear in the plan itself.
