Photographs of the nominated projects
The laureates of the “Latvia’s Best Building of the Year 2021” competition in eight categories were honoured in the Kokars Hall of the Mežaparks Open-Air Stage, with around 200 industry representatives in attendance.
“Landscape” category:
1st place: Reconstruction and restoration of Ķemeri Park in Jūrmala;
2nd place: Children’s recreation and play area in Uzvaras Park, Jelgava; Valmiera sports and active recreation park “Mežs”;
3rd place: Vizium Science and Innovation Centre in Ventspils;
Commendation: Valga–Valka twin city centre square.
BIM objects:
1st place: Multi-storey residential building project at 48 Kaivas Street, Riga;
2nd place: “Merks Viesturdārzs” residential quarter, phase 3 building on Rūpniecības Street, Riga;
3rd place: Phase 1 of a multi-storey residential building project at 5 Lucavsalas Street, Riga.
“Timber Building” category:
1st place: Ogre Central Library;
2nd place: Building by Latvian manufacturers, builders and Danish architects in Denmark – electric vehicle charging station in the inner-city Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen;
3rd place: Jaunmārupe Kindergarten;
Commendations: Latvijas valsts meži Zemgale region client centre in Jelgava, at 54A Rīgas Street; Boathouse at the Ventspils Seaside Open-Air Museum.
“Restoration” category:
1st place: Conversion of Mrs Hoijer’s hotel into a museum in the Kungu quarter, Liepāja;
2nd place: Repair of the wooden structures of the Riga St. James’s Cathedral spire and replacement of the tin roofing;
3rd place: Smiltene Evangelical Lutheran Church;
Commendations: Restored 2nd-floor rooms of the Lielvircava Manor house in Platone parish, Jelgava municipality; conversion of a building into a staff hotel in Rēzekne, at 92 Atbrīvošanas aleja.
“New Residential Building” category:
Commendation: “Divi krasti” project in Riga, on Ķengaraga Street.
Best Engineering Structures:
1st place: Northern Pier in Ventspils Port;
2nd place: Reconstruction of Marijas Street in Smiltene;
3rd place: Reconstruction of tram tracks from Vienības to Stacijas Street, and reconstruction of the intersection of 18. Novembra Street and Ventspils Street in Daugavpils;
Commendations: Reconstruction of Viestura Street in Jēkabpils; reconstruction of Mēmeles Street in Bauska.
“Reconstruction” category:
1st place: Neurology Department and Stroke Unit of Vidzeme Hospital in Valmiera;
2nd place: Daugavpils Civil Registry Office building with increased energy efficiency;
3rd place: Reconstruction of Smiltene Secondary School; reconstruction of Tukums 2nd Secondary School;
Commendation: Reconstruction and extension of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, “House of the Future”, in the Latviešu Strēlnieku Square, Riga.
“Public New Build – Industrial Building” category:
1st place: Logistics Park A6 warehouse complex at 462 Maskavas Street, Riga;
2nd place: Biodegradable waste processing plant at the “Getliņi” municipal waste landfill; SIA “Dzelzsbetons MB” production facility in Liepāja;
3rd place: A/s “Balticovo” production complex in Iecava parish, Bauska municipality; multi-storey car park at 27 Daibes Street, Mārupe.
“Public New Build” category:
1st place: Ogre Central Library;
2nd place: Phase B2 of the reconstruction of the Mežaparks Grand Stage;
3rd place: “Vizium” Science and Innovation Centre in Ventspils;
Commendation: Social Services Centre in Limbaži.
The Latvian Association of Civil Engineers awarded the title “Structural Engineer of the Year 2021” to Ēriks Pungs of SIA “Sitera”, specifically commending the engineer’s work on the new Riga Technical University Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology and public auditorium building.
