The Krustpils cannon had a long and successful life. 40 years under the Soviet regime, when we accepted the ideology it projected in silence. With the establishment of a democratic Latvian state, it spent 30 years in the new social system, yet it still instilled fear.

In truth, Gundars Kalve should be awarded for being so courageous that he overcame these long-standing fears and removed the cannon, something former municipal employees were unable to do. After all, it is the 21st century. Tell me, is there any other city in Europe where residents are overlooked by a Second World War cannon? Likely not. Therefore, thank you to Gundars Kalve for the work done! And surely the moment will soon arrive when the Red Army officer will be relieved of his guard post by the side of a noisy street and receive an honourable resting place beside his comrades-in-arms in the military cemetery.
