The town of Subate, right on the Lithuanian border, is often called a pearl of wooden architecture. The poet Imants Ziedonis once named it one of the most beautiful places in Latvia. The unusual spirit of the town he mentioned lies in its low-rise wooden buildings that line the sides of narrow and winding streets.

“The name of Subate has historically been known for a very, very long time. In 1570, the Duke of Courland sold the market site to Plāters-Zībergs, and that is when the building of this beautiful place of Subate began,” explains Skaidrīte Kaļķe, a cultural heritage expert for the Augšdaugava Municipality.

Wooden architecture is precisely the most characteristic pearl of this small town located right on the Lithuanian border.
