At the beginning of the year, there was a discussion on Krustpunktā regarding the future of peat in Latvia, noting that Europe wants to ban industrial peat extraction, which caused concern among peat substrate producers and farmers, especially seedling growers. Of course, this remains relevant from an environmental protection perspective.

In recent months, the focus has shifted. There is less talk about the environment because the energy crisis is on everyone's mind. The question that seemed to have been consigned to oblivion is being raised again: namely, that peat can also be burned. The older generation well remembers the peat briquettes that were used for heating, and there are companies that want to bring this issue back to the fore.

We have previously discussed how Nordic countries still use peat for heating. This is no longer the case in Latvia. Could the crisis be a reason to reconsider this issue for a while? Some companies are suggesting this, also promoting the idea within the Saeima Economic Committee. Is it worth revisiting the question of temporary peat use during the energy crisis?
