Sanctions will halt carbon emission reduction opportunities, according to Russia. Was such a plan ever real?

The Russian Ministry of Energy states that Western sanctions will prevent the country from achieving its intended carbon emission reduction targets. It should be noted that the sanctions involve the freezing of assets, the supply of luxury goods, a ban on air travel, and the suspension of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Last year, Russia approved a strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 2050 by 80% compared to 1990 levels, or by 60% compared to 2019 levels.

The newspaper Kommersant explains that according to the plan, state-owned energy production companies have not paid dividends since 2021, using their profits for investment instead.

It is worth noting, however, that the Russian Energy Strategy approved in 2021 provides for and emphasises solely the extraction, consumption, and export of fossil fuels.
