(...) Since the start of the hostilities, Latvijas valsts meži board member Edvīns Zakovics has been in regular contact with staff from the Ukrainian forest management agency, whose main concerns at the moment are far from planting trees: "Currently, the Ukrainians are not thinking about building modern tree nursery greenhouses. Ukrainian foresters asked for support in procuring satellite phones and medical supplies. Thanks to the Forest Certification Council of Latvia, which took on the role of coordinator for the Latvian forestry sector in both collecting financial donations and actually procuring the necessary medical supplies and phones. Latvian foresters are heading to Ukraine with practical assistance."

When we visited Ukraine at the beginning of February, our task during the visit was to provide expert opinions and share advice on the construction of modern tree nurseries. We were introduced to the developed nursery construction projects and the planned construction sites. Our detailed account of how to build an efficient and modern tree nursery from scratch raised even more questions for our Ukrainian colleagues. Understanding the value of our experience, we agreed on a return visit for the Ukrainians to Latvia, to have the opportunity to get to know and see in person how we work in Latvia and to get answers to various practical questions: what are the greenhouse structures like, their resistance to weather conditions, for example, snow, what is the production technology and other details," explains Edvīns Zakovics.
