Rēzekne to host discussion on the importance of bioeconomy for Latgale's economic development

On 21 October, a regional conference titled "Bioeconomy Research Results for Regional Development" will take place at the RTU Rēzekne Academy in Rēzekne. Economists, researchers, entrepreneurs, representatives of local governments and the forest industry will discuss Latgale's economic development, the contribution of the forest and related sectors to the regional economy, and the importance of data-driven decision-making in the sustainable management of Latvia's natural resources. This will be the second conference in a series of five regional events aimed at promoting understanding of the role of the bioeconomy in the development of Latvia's regions.

The economic development of Latgale is closely linked to the use of resources available in the region, business opportunities, and the ability to create products with higher added value. Forestry, timber processing, and other bioeconomy sectors provide jobs, promote economic activity, and create the prerequisites for attracting investment. At the same time, when making decisions on natural resource management, it is becoming increasingly important to evaluate not only environmental aspects but also the economic and social impacts on regional development.

"In Latvia, we need to change the way we talk about the use of natural resources. Too often, the discussion is reduced to a choice between economic development and environmental protection, whereas in reality, our task is to find solutions that ensure both. This requires high-quality data and comprehensive research that allows us to assess the impact of decisions made not only on the environment but also on employment, business, and the economic viability of the regions. This is especially important in Latgale, where thoughtful management of local resources and the creation of higher added value can become a significant foundation for the region's growth," emphasises Sigita Alksne, Board Member of the association "Latvijas Koks".

The conference will examine trends in Latgale's economic development and present research on the socio-economic impact of the forest and related sectors. Particular attention will be paid to how research findings can be used in shaping state and municipal development policies, strengthening the business environment, and making natural resource management decisions.

One of the most significant issues at the conference will be the potential of the bioeconomy to boost Latgale's competitiveness. For the development of the region, it is important not only to have access to natural resources but also to have the ability to process them in Latvia, develop new technologies, promote innovation, and create sustainable jobs.

"The forest industry should not be judged solely by the volume of timber harvested. Its impact is much broader – ranging from jobs and income in the regions to the development of transport, services, processing, and other related sectors. If we want to make responsible decisions about the future of Latvia, we must see this big picture. That is why it is important for the results of research to reach not only expert discussions but also local government leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs," points out Sigita Alksne.

The conference in Rēzekne continues the series of regional discussions that began in Valmiera on 14 October. As part of this, the results of bioeconomy research are being presented in various regions of Latvia, and discussions are being held on their practical application in regional development planning.

The conference is open to entrepreneurs, representatives of local and state institutions, researchers, education professionals, students, and anyone interested in Latgale's economic development and the sustainable use of Latvia's natural resources.

The conference will take place on 21 October in Rēzekne. Participation in the event is by prior registration.

The conference series is organised by the association "Latvijas Koks" with the support of the Forest Development Fund.
