To identify and discuss issues of concern to residents regarding the management of state forests in the Saulkrasti area, representatives from a/s “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) and the Saulkrasti Municipality met this week. During the meeting, solutions were sought on how to balance local recreational opportunities with the sustainable and responsible management of state forests in the Saulkrasti area, which also includes generating economic benefits for the state from timber harvesting.
Representatives of the Saulkrasti Municipality undertook to identify areas where it is necessary to agree on a separate state forest management plan with additional conditions and principles, covering aspects such as the size of felling areas, the timing of forestry operations, and other principles. LVM, in turn, committed to reviewing and evaluating the areas proposed by the municipality and the specified criteria in order to apply them in their commercial operations.
In addition, the Saulkrasti Municipality also undertook to evaluate the possibility of taking over certain state forest areas into municipal ownership in accordance with the procedures set out in regulatory enactments, in order to implement the principles and objectives defined by law, for example, to establish forest parks for recreation.
