Daugavpils University professor and entomologist Arvīds Barševskis has named a beetle species newly discovered in the Philippines Acronia paulsi Barševskis, 2022, after composer Raimonds Pauls, thereby greeting the maestro on his birthday, A. Barševskis confirmed to the LETA agency.
The entomologist explains that he has named several newly discovered beetle species in honour of prominent Latvians, such as academician Jānis Stradiņš, film director Jānis Streičs, and others.
R. Pauls' contribution to Latvian culture is invaluable, so naming this beautiful, newly discovered beetle after him is only logical, emphasises A. Barševskis.
The beetle Acronia paulsi Barševskis lives in the Philippines, on the island of Luzon. A. Barševskis described it as a new species to science at the end of last year. The scientist believes it is the most beautiful new species he discovered last year.
The scientist promises to frame a picture of the beetle and send it to R. Pauls as a testament to his life's work.
