Biogas plants allow for a reduction in the volume of organic waste ending up in landfill sites. Technologies are already being widely used in Latvia to harness biogas generated in landfill sites and closed dumps for the production of energy (electricity and heat), significantly reducing the emissions of gases that cause climate change. In essence, biogas production technologies allow for the conversion of both household and industrial organic waste into energy, while additionally yielding high-quality fertiliser for agriculture, thereby reducing pollution of the soil, water and air. Furthermore, biogas technologies open up new opportunities for strengthening Latvia's energy independence.
