The Vjosa River in Albania has now been declared Europe’s first wild river national park. It is one of the last wild (free-flowing) rivers in Europe. The Vjosa flows from the Pindus mountain range in Greece to the Adriatic Sea in Albania; it is 300 kilometres long and is free of man-made barriers such as hydroelectric dams.
These rivers and streams are home to more than 1,100 species of wildlife, including 13 animals and two plants that are recognised as globally threatened.
