Polish government will maintain operations at Turow coal mine, says Polish Prime Minister

On 7 June, the Polish Prime Minister pledged to resist attempts to close the Turow lignite mine, equating a court ruling that orders a halt to operations at the site due to environmental concerns to an attack on national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, environmental protection groups Frank Bold Foundation, Greenpeace and the ecological association EKO-UNIA stated on Tuesday that the Warsaw court has suspended the decision to extend the coal mining concession in Turow, as it could cause significant harm to the environment.

“We will certainly not allow this mine to close, we will do everything to ensure it operates normally until 2040,” the Polish Prime Minister told workers in Bogatynia, where the mine is located. “No court - neither in Brussels nor in Warsaw - will dictate to us what constitutes Poland's energy security and the security of Polish families.”

“Back in the 18th century they tried to conquer Poland, today, you see, an elite somewhere in Warsaw is serving foreign interests.”

The ruling Polish “Law and Justice” (PiS) party regularly portrays the opposition as an elite that stands with foreign interests against Poland and its concerns.
