On the donation of mineral fertilisers to the World Food Programme

In cooperation with the European Commission, Latvia has responded to the United Nations' request to mitigate the negative consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine and help address the food crisis in African and Latin American countries.

There are approximately 200,000 tonnes of mineral fertilisers of Russian origin located in Latvia, owned by companies subject to European Union sanctions, which account for an insignificant share of Russia's annual global fertiliser exports.

The United Nations World Food Programme has reached an agreement with the owners of the fertiliser shipments regarding a donation, and the Cabinet of Ministers decided on 6 December 2022 to support the donation of these mineral fertilisers to the United Nations World Food Programme with the aim of providing support to African and Latin American countries.

Latvia continues to provide constructive support together with foreign partners and international organisations to countries affected by the crisis caused by Russia's war in Ukraine. The food crisis, the shortage of mineral fertilisers and rising energy costs are consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Latvia condemns Russia's desire to use the artificial shortage of mineral fertilisers it has created for its disinformation campaign to change attitudes towards Russia's war in Ukraine.
