AS “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM), in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Agency and eight other state and non-governmental organisations, as well as four higher education institutions, will implement a joint project between 2021 and 2028 titled "Optimising the governance and management of Natura 2000 protected areas", or "LIFE-IP LatViaNature".
Within the framework of the project, plans are in place to develop innovative approaches to address current nature conservation issues and implement the priority action programme for Natura 2000 areas, thereby ensuring a favourable conservation status for habitats and species of European Union importance in Latvia.
Three main themes have been selected for the project – protected grasslands of EU importance, protected forests of EU importance, and the control of invasive or non-native species. LVM, which manages almost half of the areas of European Union importance, also known as Natura 2000 areas, will contribute to work with disturbance-dependent forest habitats, the use of remote sensing in assessing the state of forest habitats, share its experience in applying landscape ecological planning in the protection planning of forest habitats of European Union importance, and support specific measures for the control of non-native plant species.
