The Latvian Archaeological Society, marking the centenary of the birth of one of Latvia's most prominent archaeologists, Vladislavs Urtāns, has selected the Aizkraukle hillfort and ancient town as the archaeological monument for 2021.

The Aizkraukle hillfort with its bailey (also known as Augstie kalni, Kraukļu kalni, or Batarejas) is one of the most visually impressive hillforts in Latvia. The hillfort, including its bailey and the adjacent 3 ha ancient town site, is located on the right bank of the Daugava, about half a kilometre from the Skrīveri Agricultural Institute. The hillfort was constructed in a strategically advantageous position on the steep bank of the Daugava, where it is bordered on two sides—the east and the west—by two small streams that have carved deep ravines into the riverbank. In addition to these natural obstacles, two terraces were created at the top of the hillfort slopes, while the main flat area of the hillfort is separated from the bailey by a large man-made ditch, which also served as an access path to the hillfort and bailey (Urtāns 1983: 35).
