The task of politicians is to be knowledgeable, reasonable and farsighted, while gaming out every possible future scenario and calculating what is economically most beneficial for Latvia in each specific situation, rather than for those living anywhere else in Europe; for example, what we will gain and lose by introducing a specific requirement, and at the same time, what the penalty will be if we do not.

This is what Minister of Agriculture Didzis Šmits says in an interview with Dienas Bizness. In his view, changing the religion of the Green Deal is beyond our power, so we must think about how we will adapt and how we will prove our activities are in line with this religion, especially as Latvia's population is declining, meaning the human impact is becoming ever smaller and, ultimately, there are also fewer cows, which are blamed in various studies for emitting around 40% of greenhouse gases.
