Mandatory use of timber building materials must be stipulated in public building procurement

Following the European Union's (EU) target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, Latvia must also pay greater attention to the decarbonisation of its economy by stimulating the use of renewable resources in the construction of state and municipal buildings.

Building construction is one of the most energy-intensive sectors of the economy, playing a critically important role in the generation of CO2 emissions. It would therefore be prudent for Latvia to utilise the experience of other European countries, such as Finland and France, where the use of timber materials is mandatory in public procurement for state and municipal building construction, as concluded during a meeting between Minister of Economics Jānis Vitenbergs and representatives of the Latvian Forest Industry Federation council.
