The hunting season for red deer hinds and calves opens on 15 July. Later it will also be possible to hunt red deer stags and elk. All of these are animals that may be hunted only under quota. For several years now, limit-setting groups have been at work in Latvia, bringing together representatives of hunting rights holders, hunters' voluntary organisations, farmers, foresters and the responsible state institutions in order to decide how many deer and elk are to be culled in each census unit and in each of the hunting clubs.

This year the discussions were heated because of the damage done by red deer. Especially in Kurzeme.
