Riga bus terminal is calling for its symbol – the red oak – to be saved by preventing it from being felled. During the construction of the "Rail Baltica" railway line, it was initially planned to dig up and transplant the oak, but the contractor has now applied to the Riga City Council for permission to fell it.
The dendrologically valuable red oak on Maskavas iela by the railway embankment was planted in 1964 alongside the opening of the bus terminal. Significant changes await the bus terminal this December, as construction work for the "Rail Baltica" railway is set to begin on its premises.
Vaira Gromule, Chair of the Board of the bus terminal, explained that the construction project had originally provided for the oak to be transplanted. Therefore, the news that the contractor had submitted an application to the City Council's greenery commission to fell the oak came as an unexpected development.
