It is quite possible that in about 200 years, geography textbooks will no longer refer to Lake Pape, but rather to a bog. Even though a great deal of effort and funding is currently being invested in the protection and preservation of this significant European habitat, the natural process is inevitable. This was also acknowledged by the Nature Conservation Agency (DAP), which nevertheless emphasised that everything possible must be done to extend the lake's lifespan.
Standing by the model of Lake Pape, it is clearly visible that it looks like several small, separate ponds. Approximately 80% of the lake's nearly 3,000-hectare area has become overgrown with reeds. Geology doctor Jānis Lapinskis occasionally shares his observations on natural phenomena publicly; this time he has stated that the remaining lifespan of this lake is 100-200 years. (...)
