German Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck's ambitious energy transition plans are being harshly criticised by the opposition, who argue that the Green Party politician is jeopardising the country's economic stability in the name of emission reductions. In his first speech since taking office, R. Habeck focused primarily on climate issues, leading a Christian Democrat representative to conclude that the minister is either uninterested in the economy or finds it unimportant.

"If the title of a minister's portfolio includes the word 'economics', the minister must also think about it. At a time when many industries are in a difficult situation due to the pandemic and other problems, it is not enough for a minister to 'shift into high gear' only regarding climate issues. A successful energy transition is possible if industries and businesses carry it out themselves; a planned green economy will not work."
