On 2 February, the European Commission decided to classify nuclear energy and natural gas as sustainable energy sources under certain conditions. The strong backlash that began after the EU first introduced its plans in January is being led by Austria and Luxembourg, with the latter's energy minister, Claude Turmes, tweeting that they would "consider further legal steps to fight this decision". No matter how important the move towards cleaner and more climate-friendly fuel sources may be, it may still be some time before the world can stop using coal and, in particular, natural gas.
