Zemgale forests suffer most in storm

The territory of the Zemgale forest district has suffered the most from the hail and wind damage on 7 August. Relatively extensive damage has also been identified in the Vidzeme region, where strong winds and rain raged. The assessment of forest damage throughout Latvia is still ongoing, hindered by roads blocked by trees.

Andis Purs, Head of the Forest and Environmental Protection Division of the State Forest Service, reports: “The storm and hail were particularly severe in the Dobele municipality – Tērvete, Bukaiši, Augstkalne, Gardene, and the Vilce parish of the Jelgava municipality. Currently, the identified extent of forest damage is approximately 1000 hectares, but it may prove to be even greater. The assessment of the damage is still underway; work is being hampered by the difficulty of moving around the area, as roads remain blocked and have not yet been cleared of broken and fallen trees.”

In the territory of the North-Eastern forest district, damage has been identified in Druviena, Ranka, Tirza, and Lizums; in territories managed by a/s “Latvijas valsts meži”, pines have been uprooted and broken, the Lizums cemetery has been damaged, and forests belonging to the “Meža pētīšanas stacija” have been damaged in Launkalne. There is also damage in the Variņi area.
