Nature behaves slightly differently in every location. These accounting algorithms have been developed by scientists but approved by politicians, and it is precisely in this transition that the big business happens.
For example, peat is not a problem for us today, but from 2025 onwards, it will become a major issue. Why? Because peat is not included in today's algorithm, but it will be in the one that operates five years later. Peat bogs will not change, but the emission accounting algorithms will.
The same applies to diesel fuel – at the moment, it has a favourable status in the algorithm, but in two years' time, it will become significantly less favourable.
One such opportunity created by the algorithm is the accounting of greenhouse gas emissions from land. Scandinavian countries use these mechanisms intensively, whereas in Latvia they are not used at all as yet.
