In Chile, the Atacama Desert is a place that representatives of the global fashion industry have, for some reason, chosen as the sector's dumping ground. More than 100,000 tonnes of various items of clothing, many of which still have price tags (meaning they were neither sold nor worn), have ended up in the desert sands. The idea—or concept—of "fast fashion", namely the large-scale production of cheap and disposable clothing, has made the fashion industry one of the most polluting in the world, ranking just behind oil extraction and agriculture.
