The speed at which the number of jobs shrank and the population registered for unemployment status in April 2020 was quite similar to that experienced during the 2009 global financial crisis.

However, this time, instead of "tightening belts", employers and employees were offered various support mechanisms, which allowed companies to retain staff even with a significant drop in turnover. Therefore, it can be said that, on the whole, the goal of state support was achieved - to prevent a domino cascade of corporate insolvencies. The unemployment rate in the country also only increased slightly, while the volume of the economy returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Nevertheless, the overall figures conceal a "two-speed Latvia". One part of society successfully transitioned to remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic and did not experience a drop in prosperity within their families, whereas for another part of the population, incomes and a sense of security about the future fell significantly.
