Many will know the song "A maiden went to the spring, a green jug in her hand". It is a common stereotype that until quite recently, young women carried water from a river, lake, spring, or well. I will have to disappoint all the "know-it-alls", because as early as the late 19th century, very many Latvian farmsteads had water supply systems. These were not made of cast iron or steel, but of wooden pipes that had been bored out and connected end-to-end.
Did you know that by the end of the 19th century, many Latvian farmsteads had running water?
