Together with his colleagues, Aleksejs Nipers is working on three projects for the European Union’s research support programme Horizon 2020. One of the bioeconomy topics is nitrogen emissions. These have been little studied, so scientists are looking for the right formulas, the right approach, to calculate and forecast these emissions.

A. Nipers: “Everything is changing in this process. Both the understanding of its nature and the concept of how to research and analyse these facts. At the moment, standardised formulas are already being offered that can be used for general calculations. However, we are looking for ways to adapt them to the situation current in Latvia. Nitrogen emission depends on a great many local factors: on soil, climate, and management technologies. We do not want to use equations and assumptions for emission calculations that have been developed in different conditions and not verified in Latvia, because they could lead us to incorrect conclusions and the implementation of ineffective actions for Latvian conditions.”
