COP26 promises to end deforestation* by 2030. Is it a significant agreement, or a repeat of past mistakes?

The first major agreement of COP26 was reached on 2 November: more than 100 world leaders have pledged to end deforestation by 2030. The agreement is unprecedented: leaders of countries that "oversee" around 85% of the world's forests have promised to halt deforestation and land degradation.

It should be noted that, with the exception of Bolivia and Venezuela, all other countries in the region of the world's largest forest—the Amazon rainforest—have signed the agreement. It is positive that Brazil, which contains the vast majority of the aforementioned rainforest, has supported the agreement.

*It is important to clearly understand the difference between deforestation and forestry. The Latvian forestry sector does not deforest, and in Latvia as a whole, it is done very little.
