I do not find the language mistakes on social media and in the press funny. Why pay much attention to the trifles, as long as it is somewhat understandable what the writer wants to say. We all want to be understood and not be misunderstood – in my opinion, that is the true purpose of spelling. Books and thick journals are places where everything must be clean and clear, yes, also as a testament to what the Latvian language is like right now – later there will be something to compare it with. That is what I am busy with, that is what I care about.

If you think about the conditions we are forced to write in nowadays, or even discuss major purchases – on a pedestrian crossing looking at a phone screen with the sun shining on it. At the other end, someone is standing on one leg in a supermarket fitting room in Spain in front of a mirror and waiting for my reply. One girl told how she lost a potential boyfriend after a WhatsApp message: "I cannot be your friend!" She did not continue the chat that day. When it was already too late, the guy explained his mistake, the fateful trifle: "Why are you fussing, I just missed – I wanted to type ?, but it is next to !" But the bitterness remains, as the old joke goes.
