Recycling, green energy, restraint – what are the recipes when facing an energy crisis and a climate emergency? Euronews visited Malmö, known as a model for a sustainable economy, to find some answers.
Olof and his wife Yuki are both industrial designers and take pride in the produce they grow on one of the plots rented out by the city of Malmö in southern Sweden. For them, it is a way to protect the environment by producing part of the food they consume with their two children.
"The ambition of global food systems is to provide everything at any time anywhere in the world. But when energy prices rise and there is uncertainty, it is a very fragile system. It works as long as it is powered by large amounts of fossil fuels, but we, of course, have to look for alternative ways to provide food for ourselves."
In their apartment in the city centre, Olof and Yuki are also looking for ways to follow a more sustainable lifestyle. They try to buy as many products as possible without packaging and recycle paper, metal, glass and plastic, as well as bio-waste, which is used for biogas production.
