On 18 March, the Belgian government decided to postpone its plan to phase out the use of nuclear energy by 10 years. This is linked to the spike in energy prices caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As is known, it had previously been decided to phase out the use of nuclear energy entirely by 2025.

The federal government decided to act to extend the operation of two nuclear reactors for another 10 years, the Belgian Prime Minister announced, explaining that such action would strengthen the country's independence from fossil fuel sources in the currently very unpredictable geopolitical situation. Belgium's decision has prompted some in its neighbouring country, Germany, to speak out more loudly about the need to reconsider its shift in nuclear energy policy, but... ministers in Berlin reiterated last week that, despite very high prices, there will be no nuclear power plants in Germany.
