In Madona Municipality, farmers are being forced to keep their livestock indoors, even though there is lush grazing available at the moment; all because of wolves.

This year, wolves have raided twenty-two farms already. The losses suffered by farmers are significant. According to data compiled by the State Forest Service, 43 sheep, three calves, one cow, four dogs and five red deer in the Briežu dārzs area have been killed. The Service itself admits, however, that not all victims report what has happened, so this statistic is certainly only the tip of the iceberg.

"I would not say there are more of them; they are remaining at the same level as in previous hunting seasons. And we have not changed these quotas for more than four years, for five years now. We allow 280 individuals to be culled, and as of this moment, 100 of the 280 authorised have been culled," noted Valters Lūsis, Head of the Hunting Division at the State Forest Service.

The highest number of attacks has been recorded in the Ventspils, Augšdaugava, Madona, Rauna and Viļaka municipalities. In Ošupe, Madona Municipality, wolves also broke into a calf enclosure during the night.
