“Baltic Waste & Energy Group” group company SIA “Granit Power” has submitted an application to the European Commission’s Innovation Fund programme “Deployment of innovative net-zero carbon emission technologies for climate neutrality”, in order to develop the first CO₂-negative cogeneration plant in the Baltics. This is a significant step towards sustainable and climate-neutral energy production in Latvia. In total, 395 applications have been received under the programme, requesting 21.7 billion, of which 2.4 billion is available.
The future cogeneration plant is expected to be intended not only for energy production, but also for research and for gathering data on the efficiency and environmental impact of various types of fuel. The plant is designed to produce heat and electricity from second-cycle biomass materials, such as waste wood and other low-quality fuels. The new plant is set to incorporate modern CO₂ capture technologies that keep greenhouse gas emissions to a minimum, as well as providing online monitoring of flue gases, ensuring transparent operation based on scientific data.
“Our plan is not just another energy project – it is an entirely new approach to the use of resources. Until now, low-quality biomass residues have been regarded as a burden, but we see them as a potential source of energy to be used on a research-based footing. The project has now been submitted for evaluation, and if it is supported, an innovative model will be created in Latvia that can also be adapted and used in the other Baltic states,” emphasises Jānis Pāvuls, technical director of SIA “Baltic Waste & Energy Group”.
