Latvian Foreign Minister opposes proposal to introduce EU-wide constituency at General Affairs Council

On 18 October 2022, Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs participated in a meeting of the European Union (EU) General Affairs Council (GAC) in Luxembourg. The meeting focused on an initial discussion regarding the reform of the European Parliament electoral procedure, follow-up measures to the Conference on the Future of Europe, and the issue of the need for a Convention to discuss amendments to the EU founding treaties, as well as preparations for the 20-21 October meeting of EU heads of state and government (European Council).

Regarding the European Parliament's proposals to create an EU-wide constituency and to convene a Convention to amend the EU founding treaties, E. Rinkēvičs was dismissive: "Wartime is not the right moment for such uncertain experiments; the EU must focus on overcoming the geopolitical and energy crises."
