Are forest regeneration areas increasing in Latvia?

Forest regeneration areas in Latvia are increasing, and this is largely due to increasingly educated forest owners, explained the Forest Advisory Centre of the Rural Support Service (LLKC) to the LETA agency.

According to data from the State Forest Service, the area of forests regenerated by sowing and planting in private forests is increasing every year; in 2019, it reached 7,300 hectares, which is 25% of the total regenerated forest area, whereas in 2010, the area regenerated by sowing or planting was 1,700 hectares, accounting for 9% of the total regenerated forest area.

Raimonds Bērmanis, director of the LLKC Forest Advisory Centre, noted that the area of forest regenerated by private owners last year is the highest figure achieved in private forests since the restoration of national independence, both in terms of total planted/sown area in hectares and as a percentage of the total regenerated forest area.
