While conducting an environmental survey for the reconstruction of the forest road 'Gribolvas ceļš' in the Preiļi forest district of the South Latgale region of a/s 'Latvijas valsts meži', environmental expert Gaidis Grandāns discovered rare wood-inhabiting fungus species in Latvia.
On a large-diameter spruce log, a bracket fungus species very rarely found throughout Latvia and Northern Europe, the cotton-like anomoporia Anomoporia bombycina, was discovered. This fungal species is characterised by thin, ephemeral fruit bodies with a bluish, lavender or greyish hue. The species was first discovered in Latvia in 2016. In total, more than 20 locations of the species are known, most of which have been identified in Gauja National Park.
