A question (and appeal) to Latvia's environmental activists or “green” organisations

What and how, and do you even think, comrades?

We have already experienced what happens when an idea suppresses common sense.

We lived through 2021, which was the Year of Rail in Europe, perhaps without noticing that Latvia's once-dense railway network now leaves the impression of moth-eaten fabric.

We have encountered a desire to restrict our home producers and gardeners (for example, the 2012 speculations about “correct and incorrect” tomato seeds, etc.).

We are facing a large, unstoppable and truly inconceivable desire to restrict our forestry, agriculture and peat sectors. At present, there is no end or limit in sight to this desire.

We do not see, or see very little of, Latvia's far-reaching goals and development plans.

The forestry sector does not and has never worked on the principle of “I imagined it – I cut it”, but together with farmers and peat producers forms the backbone of the Latvian economy, thinking about nature, the population and the future of the state.

It is to be assumed that the people who call themselves activists, using the word “green”, do not create their thoughts and texts on a typewriter by a campfire, where a soup of a hare hunted with a bow and arrow bubbles in a pot.

If those who wish to call themselves green want a forest-covered, very poor country in the centre of Europe, where there is a small layer of conservationists who have sold Latvia's natural greenery to a wealthy “environmental defender” and live off the money from discarded projects, they should say so.

If the green idea can only fuel itself with gas from a neighbouring country – that should be said.

If someone actively wants everything in Latvia to be bad, they should say so!

If someone pretends not to understand what this is about, it is well and clearly visible! You cannot hide it...

*What this is about: “In an open letter, the LOB and other non-governmental organisations emphasise that supporting the burning of wood is contrary to EU climate and nature conservation goals.”
