River barrier clearance project expected in Latvia

Thanks to public engagement, nearly 70 barriers located on Latvian rivers have been identified as part of the “For Clean Rivers” project. Specialists have assessed and selected 10 of these that obstruct river flow and whose removal would be significant for improving the Latvian river ecosystem in the near future.

It is planned to remove the three most significant barriers from the list within the next few years, thereby restoring the natural flow of the rivers, namely:

Culvert on the Pietēnupīte at its confluence with the Lielā Jugla, which flows into the Gulf of Riga via the lakes near Riga. It is a culvert that fish cannot pass, making the entire upper reaches of the river inaccessible to them, thus having an adverse impact on the overall river ecosystem and fish populations.

Culvert on the Sveķupīte near its confluence with the Lenčupe, which flows into the Gauja. This culvert is too shallow, making it impassable for fish. By deepening the culvert, the river would be opened to the migration of both migratory and other fish species. The Sveķupīte is located within the territory of the Gauja National Park, and valuable sea trout spawning grounds are found in its upper reaches.

Beja dam on the Alūksne river. It is a non-functional dam where no economic activity currently takes place. After the removal of this dam, the river would be opened to the migration of all aquatic life. It is important for any species of aquatic animal to be able to move, both in search of better feeding conditions and for breeding.

Also on the list are:

· Ropaži dam on the Lielā Jugla,

· a man-made barrier for pond farming purposes on the Rēzekne river,

· railway bridge with a culvert on the Siliņupīte,

· Staicele dam on the Salaca,

· log jams in the Veseta river,

· culvert on the Gosupe river,

· former hydroelectric power station dam on the Vaive.
