The “Lubāns Wetland” nature reserve is a unique nature complex of European and global significance, covering an area of 513 square kilometres. It was established in 2009 by merging 12 smaller nature reserves. Up until now, individual nature conservation regulations were in force for each reserve, but the first joint nature conservation plan for the entire Lubāns Wetland area has now been drafted. Public consultation on the plan is currently underway, and local residents have expressed concern about the potential negative impact of the measures included in it on their properties and way of life.
