Misunderstanding regarding Green Deal guidelines causes tension for the peat industry

Uncertainty surrounding the interpretation of statements made by European Commission (EC) officials regarding the Green Deal, which is linked to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and climate-neutral policy, triggered a wave of indignation in the Latvian peat sector during February and March. Ultimately, the Executive Vice-President of the EC, Valdis Dombrovskis, one of the most high-ranking Latvian officials in the “Brussels bureaucracy”, clarified at the end of last week that Latvia has not been given a mandate to abandon peat extraction. Specifically, peat in Latvia is almost never extracted for fuel, but rather for agriculture and horticulture. “However, funds will be available for the modernisation of the industry and for the reduction of emissions in peat extraction,” emphasises V. Dombrovskis.
