The Caribbean coast is relatively under-researched, and there are reasons for this – travel is mostly by boat, there is a lack of written sources, and working conditions are harsh and dangerous. In the past, these coasts hosted pirate ports, but today they are used for the distribution and transport of drugs.

The researcher acknowledged that the Nicaraguan coast is an interesting place worth studying because it was never colonised. “While all the great empires—the Maya, the Inca—fell to the Spanish conquistadors, and the Caribbean islands and their indigenous populations were completely subjugated, this Nicaraguan coast remained under the control of the Miskito Kingdom. The Miskito are a people of both indigenous American and African descent. Together, they created this kingdom, which, in principle, manipulated both the British Empire and the Spanish Empire right up until the 19th century.”
