Juris Lamberts, director of the Latvian Association of Independent Retailers, also raised the alarm in a statement to the media: “During this busy festive period, both literally and figuratively, small retailers are having to turn down profitable, large-scale offers from beverage suppliers because there is a lack of space in stores to display the goods. It would be more accurate to say that the space exists, but it is occupied for days on end by bags of deposit packaging waiting to be collected. This not only takes up extra space, but it also smells and creates a breeding ground for cockroaches and other pests,” said Mr Lamberts.
